SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assitance Program is formerly known as Food Stamp organized by the US government to fulfill the daily food requirements of the low-income group. It is a federal nutrition program that helps you stretch your food budget and buy healthy food.

The person who is eligible for SNAP can buy foods each month from grocery stores, convenience stores, farmers’ markets, and co-op food programs by using EBT(Electronic Benefits Transfer) Card.

Bellevue Patch Report on List of Top SNAP Users

Bellevue Patch looked into the companies having the most employees using Washington SNAP — the state’s food stamp program. It found that while companies such as Amazon and Walmart have boasted great success at one end, many of their workers at the other end are struggling to make ends meet, using government services.

According to the list “Walmart ranked No. 1 with nearly 4,000 employees while Amazon, Safeway, McDonald’s and Uber were among the nine companies that have at least 1,000 workers receiving SNAP.”

“One of the symptoms of low-wage work is these workers showing up on public assistance rolls. That’s not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, it’s certainly not great. But the issue is their wages are low,” said Ian Perry, research and policy associate at the Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education.

Patch was trying to reach out to several corporations in the list. While some did not respond and other said the list is misleading because it also includes seasonal and part-time workers. However, Fred Meyer’s spokesman Jeffery Temple has said that the organization is having 16,666 employees in Washington and under 10% out of them are receiving SNAP.
